13 Living Environment Labs

A share-a-thon is a place where teachers can voluntarily upload their files for other teachers to use. When a teacher submits a file, it is catalogued and placed into a database. To view more materials from the topic above or from different branches of science click here.

Measuring Yeast Respiration
This lab, using relatively simple and readily available lab equipment, is designed to determine whether the amount of sugar (sucrose) available to yeast cells affects the rate at which they carry out respiration.

Egg Osmosis Lab
I like this lab in spite of the repetition of some concepts contained in the Diffusion Through a Membrane Lab. I save that one for later in the year, closer to the exam date.

Model Natural Selection
In this activity, students will create a simple model of natural selection. Then, they will have a better understanding of how natural selection changes a population.

PTC Testing Activity
In this activity, you will taste a piece of PTC paper to see if you are dominant or recessive for the trait. You will use this information to predict the possible genotypes and phenotypes for your parents.

Punnett Squares - Dominant & Recessive Disorder
In this activity, students will use Punnett Squares to determine the genotypes, phenotypes, and percentages of parents and children with certain traits. Students will learn about 2 genetic disorders determine which parents are more likely to have a child

Punnett Squares - Eye Color
In this activity, students will practice using Punnett Squares to determine traits of children. Students will determine genotypes and phenotypes of parents and children, use percentages to show how often certain genotypes and phenotypes will be seen.

Mutations
This activity evaluates the effect of different mutations on proteins. Words represent amino acids in order to make it more understandable.

Reproduction Project
Create a poster to demonstrate the unique reproductive strategy of an organism. In the most general sense, there are only two strategies for reproduction: asexual & sexual.

Cookbook Lab
Every cell in your body is genetically identical (except for variation caused by mutation). So, why do you have such a huge variety of cells? This take home lab will show why using a cookbook analogy.

Cell Organelles And Their Cellular Processes
Table that can be used to review cell organelles and their functions.
