Mapping Share-a-thon 55 Files

A share-a-thon is a place where teachers can voluntarily upload their files for other teachers to use. When a teacher submits a file, it is catalogued and placed into a database.

 

Hurricane Tracking Lab
In this lab, you'll plot the path of the tropical depressions, storms, and hurricanes that occur during the current Atlantic hurricane season in an effort to learn where hurricanes get their energy, where they go, and why.

A simple pencil and paper activity to introduce students to latitude, longitude and world geography.

Creating Topographic Maps
Students can use Microsoft Excel to create three-dimensional topographic maps. Just change the elevation data and the map automatically changes!

Contour Plates by Drew Patrick
Students construct 3-D models of topographic maps using glass plates.

Connecticut River Profile Lab by Steve Kluge
Use the data table provided to construct a profile of the Connecticut River from it's mouth to it's source.

World Time-Day Lab
Create a manipulative to determine the time or date of locations around the world.

Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario
Plot the shipwrecks of Lake Ontario using degrees and minutes.

Topography Lab in 3-D
Students can use foam sheets or trays, or they can use corrugated cardboard to make a three dimensional step model of a real New York State landscape. (Or you can use a local USGS Topo map.) The file includes the lab, a map, a key and teaching tips.

Tracking Hurricane Isadore
Students will plot the track of hurricane Isadore and issue hurricane and tropical storm warnings.
