Available Resources
Printable Circular Protractors
Printable circular protractors for HS Earth & Space Science Investigation: Unearthing Mars. These will need to be resized based on the scale the student worksheets are printed at. Suggestions for printing: Print on cardstock and laminate, or print on transparencies.
Fillable CER Template in PDF (Claim Evidence Reasoning)
This fillable PDF CER template is designed for students to practice constructing explanations for observed phenomena using evidence-based reasoning, aligning with the NYSSLS focus on inquiry and critical thinking. You provide the question and the students can type their responses in the CER.
Milankovitch Cycles and Their Impacts On Long-Term Climate
Students model Milankovitch Cycles and how long term climate changes. Students will create models to predict how these cycles impact Earth’s climate in a predictable patterns.
Earthquake Cluster
Here is a cluster on Earthquakes that links Earth's System (HS-ESS2-3) & Human sustainability (HS-ESS3-1).
Mount Everest: Ever Growing
Here is a sample cluster about plate tectonics. It is focused on Mount Everest Growing.
Resource Extraction Proposal: Choosing the Best Mining Site
In this final assessment, students will select a mining location and justify their choice with evidence. The assessment is divided into multiple sections across five class periods. Over three periods, students will conduct research in their lab groups. In the final two periods, they will individually write their proposals.
Mining for Ore Simulation
Groups create a shoebox landscape with sand, peanuts, and decorations. After marking peanut locations, they cover them with sand. Groups then swap boxes, use toothpicks and forceps to extract peanuts without hands, and bury the shells.
Hubble's Law Model
This lab reinforces the idea of an expanding universe utilizing a balloon and a tape measure. After the lab, students analyze patterns and use a diagram to explain how Hubble's law connects with the Big Bang Theory
Modeling Plate Spreading
This experiment demonstrates how temperature affects water movement through convection currents using food coloring. By comparing the results, they’ll gain a visual understanding of how heat influences fluid dynamics and it can be applied to plate tectonics.
Evidence of the Earth’s History
This document compares surface features of Mars, Earth, and the Moon, focusing on crater distribution, surface stability, and geological activity. Using data on crater counts, oldest minerals, volcanic activity, and atmospheric presence, students construct an argument about Earth's formation and its unique geological history compared to Mars and the Moon.
Plate Tectonics
This document is a high school-level short performance assessment aligned with HS-ESS1-5. It focuses on evaluating evidence supporting plate tectonics and the ages of crustal rocks. Students analyze models, maps, and diagrams showing oceanic crust age patterns, magnetic anomalies, and isotopic dating.
Earth and Space Science Cluster Questions (Sample Fall 2024) with Answers
Contains sample questions and answers designed for assessing students' understanding of key earth and space science concepts. Each cluster includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, with accompanying answer keys and explanations aligned with performance expectations from earth and space science standards.
Earth and Space Science Cluster Questions (Sample Spring 2024) with Answers
Contains sample questions and answers designed for assessing students' understanding of key Earth and Space Science concepts. Each cluster includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, with accompanying answer keys and explanations aligned with performance expectations from Earth and Space Science standards.
Life Science: Biology Cluster Questions (Sample Spring 2024) with Answers
Contains sample questions and answers designed for assessing students' understanding of key life science biology concepts. Each cluster includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, with accompanying answer keys and explanations aligned with performance expectations.
Life Science: Biology Cluster Questions (Sample Fall 2024) with Answers
Contains sample questions and answers designed for assessing students' understanding of key life science biology concepts. Each cluster includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, with accompanying answer keys and explanations aligned with performance expectations.
Understanding Earth's Interior and Thermal Convection
This simple and short worksheet introduces students to Earth's interior structure and the process of thermal convection in the mantle. The worksheet includes a short reading passage and ten comprehension questions with an optional extension activity.
The Universe and the Big Bang Theory Worksheet
This simple and short worksheet explores the origins and evolution of the universe, focusing on the Big Bang Theory, redshift, and cosmic microwave background radiation as key pieces of evidence supporting the theory. It explains how scientists use these observations to understand the universe's expansion and history.
STL file for Air Pressure Blocks
Link to a website that has the .stl file to print the required blocks for the Weather and Climate the Sky is the Limit Lab. These technically are not necessary as there are paper foldables provided but this may prove useful for some who want to 3D print instead.
